Our Journey

A message from our Founder and CEO, Dana Buckley:

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I suddenly found myself as a full-time single parent of three young children, and going through a very difficult and painful divorce.

Despite the many advantages to help me (I made my own money in a job I loved at Indeed.com, had terrific attorneys, had tons of support from family and friends, and – with a Ph.D. in political science – knew more than most about navigating government websites and red tape)….

Even so, this experience utterly and totally sucked.

I can remember very clearly that chilly evening in March 2021, trying to cook dinner after a full day of work, spaghetti sauce simmering on the stove, the sounds of cartoons zip-zooming from the other room, the stack of bills and ever-decreasing-balance bank statements piled on the counter, unfolded heaps of clothes in a laundry basket, our dog scratching at the door to be let outside, dirty dishes in the sink, the thought of dozens of new emails in my inbox to be answered later that night. Just then, the pot of noodles boiled over, sending a hissing blast of starchy foam all over the countertop.

At that moment, I felt utterly overwhelmed. I felt exhausted. And I felt deeply, deeply alone.

I burst into tears. (This was not actually about cleaning up pasta water).

How was I going to navigate this new experience of separation and divorce  – not just for me, but for my children?

I wished there was a single place I could go to make this journey easier: a place with knowledge and information to guide me on what to expect. A place with tools to help me to take action. A place with resources to lean on and use if I needed. And above all, a place to help me remember that I wasn’t alone and that brighter days lie ahead.

I looked out the kitchen window into the gathering dusk, and saw the first evening star sparkling in the night sky. In that moment, I resolved to use and transform my pain into something that would help others going through similar experiences, and specifically, to help people who didn’t have the advantages I had.

That night, TheAfterEve was born.

In the coming years, I would wake up early and stay up late to envision the offerings you’ll see here. After my divorce was finalized, I used my own money that I had saved but didn’t spend on trial to bootstrap the development of TheAfterEve. Now with a team of talented contributors alongside – we’re helping more and more people find their way forward. We’d love to help you too.

What makes us different?

It’s our focus on taking action. We get right to the point: helping you figure out where to start, identify your options of what to do, and supporting you in whatever direction you choose to go. While you could spend a lot of time researching, comparing, and figuring out what to do in navigating these relationship changes, we put everything you need in one place. We respect that time, money, and mental/ emotional energy are your most valuable assets, and strive to help you to use them well.
